Alphakids is a core programme of supportive texts for children in the early years of literacy. Supporting the National Literacy Strategy Framework for Teaching, the Alphakids Alphabet Books build on children's awareness of the sounds of language in everyday talk, songs, books and the environment. 

Children's names are used as an engaging staarting point for exploring the relationship between sounds and letters. Sounds and letters are demonstrated in the context of social events and experiences which have meaning for children. 

Teachers can use Alphakids Alphabet Books with the whole-class, with small groups and with individual children. Alphakids Alphabet Books may be introduced to children in various ways, including through social events, to follow up on children's inquiries about words they want to write and read and with emergent reading books to strengthen understanding.
